Processing MARC records

To keep the records in sabre up to date, we need to copy over the MARC records from the two systems; pre-process them a little and then import them in to vufind. The pre-processing script was created by the University of Swansea and adds, amongst other things, a subfield to record which library(ies) it belongs to, and also deduplicates records for the same item between the two catalogues.

During the pre-processing stage we were having some problems, some of the MARC files were not being fully processed by the perl script, resulting in missing records, due to unusual characters in certain records.

This blog post (on another blog) outlines how we found a work around for this.

We’ve also uploaded a few scripts on to Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/credaul/source/browse/
